The Battle of Wakefield

30th December 1460

The end of the game can be seen in the overview shot below. Lord Roo is saved by hiding in the woods from the Duke of York’s Cavalry and one Levy is poised to shower the Cavalry with arrows.

Lord Clifford is steadying his Household waiting for the next charge and has to try and reform his ranks.

While the Earl of Wiltshire is trying to motivate and move the Levy forward to be useful. We tallied the points as per the rule book and it was a good victory to the Yorkist force and history was changed.

While playing the game it felt wrong that the Cavalry were so powerful and turned things to the Yorkist advantage very quickly. As noted previously there is some discussion that Cavalry were not really used like this on the field of battle as they were too easily taken down. If this is the case (and I do not have enough knowledge to say this is) then perhaps the Cavalry should only have a 50 / 50 save rather than the 2 /3 rds they were getting and making.

Mind you even with this change the Yorkist player was on fire with the dice rolls and had very few go against him. One notable exception was when he got two 1’s for saving rolls and lost a couple of bases. This was a shock as he had not been losing any up to that point.

I suppose ultimately this could have been the result of the original battle if luck had favoured the Duke of York and so I should not feel too bad that I lost so badly what I thought would be an easy victory….

Either way with hindsight a good game and I am looking forward to my next defeat.
